Osborne Seniors Savannah Noel & Olivia Engler and the St. John's Blujays Boys Cross Country team members have been named the NCKSSports.com/Cunningham Telephone and Cable Athletes of the Week.

Noel & Engler both qualified for the 3-2-1A Girls State Tennis Tournament this coming weekend at Harmon Park in Prairie Village.  Noel finished 2nd place at the 3-2-1A Regional in Phillipsburg this past weekend.  She won her first match in straight sets over Mackenzie Dodson of Colby (6-0, 6-0), then beat Madisyn Lemman of Colby (6-0, 6-1) in the quarterfinals.  In the semis, she faced her teammate Engler, winning that match in straight sets as well, 6-1 & 6-1.  In the championship match, she fell to Hannah Radke of Victoria 6-0, 6-0.  Engler ended up in 3rd place for the tournament, as she won her first match in straight sets over Steph Soukup of Ellsworth (6-2, 6-0) then won in the quarters over Samantha Prewitt of Phillispburg (6-1, 6-1).  After losing to Noel in the semis, Engler came back to win the 3rd Place match over Morgan Leiker of Victoria, 6-4 & 6-4.  Both players finished 3-1 on the weekend.

St. John's has been dominating the competition in the field in boys cross country this season.  When the Blujays have fielded their full team, they have taken first place at every meet this season.  That includes team championships at Concordia (8/31), Stockton (9/7), Republic County (9/21), Beloit (9/28) and Riley County (10/7).  At Stockton and Beloit, the Blujays took first place as a team and finished with the top four runners individually.  David Lutgen has taken first place at every regular season event this year, and the Blujays top four runners have finished every meet with their lowest placing being no worse than 6th place each time out.  Adam Bates has finished 2nd three times, 3rd once and 4th once.  Brandon Bates has finished no worse than 5th in each meet, and won the Smith Center Invitational.  Caleb Eilert has finished 4th thru 6th in each event.  Lutgen and Bates also competed earlier this year at the Rim Rock Farm High School Classic in Lawrence on September 23.  Lutgen finished 3rd overall in the Varsity Blue Race, while Bates was 13th, as a total of 350 runners competed in that event.  St. John's is the defending 1A State Cross Country Champion and hopes to repeat this fall.

We will announce the winners each week. Remember, you can nominate an athlete from any school sport.
