Members of the St. John's/Tipton Volleyball team have been named the NCKSSports.com/Cunningham Telephone and Cable Athletes of the Week.

St. John's/Tipton finished 4th place at the 2017 1A-DII State Volleyball Tournament on October 27 & 28 at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.  The Lady Jays qualified for state for the fourth time in five seasons, but this was the first year that they made it out of pool play and into Saturday's semifinals.  They ended up as the winners of Pool II, going 2-1 on Friday.  They lost their opening match to Waverly in three (25-15, 20-25, 22-25), but bounced back with a three-set win over Axtell (9-25, 25-8, 25-12) in their second match.  In the final match of the evening, the beat Northern Valley in two (25-19, 25-22) to win the pool.  Saturday, they lost both matches in two to Otis-Bison (20-25, 16-25) and Wheatland-Grinnell (21-25, 20-25).  Despite going 2-3 on the weekend, they were the only team to beat eventual state champion Northern Valley at the tournament.  Also, for their efforts, middle hitter Kara Eilert and setter Caitlin Strong were named to the All-Tournament Team for 1A-DII State Volleyball.  With the fourth place finish, the Lady Jays finished the 2017 season at 32-12.

We will announce the winners each week. Remember, you can nominate an athlete from any school sport.
