Smith Center Senior Jesse Staples has been named the Telephone and Cable Athlete of the Week.

Staples has had an outstanding year from his running back position for the Smith Center Redmen football team.  He was the leading rusher the past two playoff games for the Redmen.  On Friday night, in Smith Center's 51-0 Sub-State win over Plainville, Staples ran for 238 yards on just 11 carries and had two touchdowns.  In the Sectional round of the 2-1A Playoffs on November 10, Staples scored four rushing touchdowns and had 259 yards on 13 carries in Smith Center's 64-7 win at Elkhart.  On the season, Staples is the only Smith Center back to rush for over 1,000 yards.  He has 1,271 yards on 87 carries, good for 14.6 yards per carry.  He also has 24 rushing touchdowns for the Redmen who are playing in the 2-1A State Championship this Saturday against Pittsburg-Colgan in Hays.
