Members of the Smith Center Redmen Football team have been named the Telephone and Cable Athletes of the Week.

Smith Center claimed their 9th KSHSAA State Football Championship in school history with a 43-7 win over Pittsburg-St. Mary's Colgan in the 2-1A Championship on Saturday night at Lewis Field in Hays.  The Redmen had built a 29-0 lead before Pittsburg-Colgan even had a first down on offense.  They led 29-0 at half, and extended that lead to 36-0 in the 3rd.  Smith Center racked of 436 yards of total offense in the win.  Jesse Staples, last week's athlete of the week, led the way with 17 carries for 131 yards and 3 TD.  Three other Redmen backs finished with over 70 rushing yards.  Hesston Maxwell had 19 carries for 79 yards and a TD, Colton Hutchinson added eight carries for 78 yards, while Trace Haven had 14 carries for 73 yards and a score.  Hutchinson also connected with Brett Meyer four times for 56 yards and a TD in the passing game.  Colby Benoit also had a big game for the Redmen defense with two interceptions in the win.  Smith Center finished the season at 12-1 with the win.  Their offense was solid as always, but the defense was outstanding down the stretch.  After giving up 44 points combined in the first three games of the season, the Redmen held their final ten opponents to 34 points combined.  In the end, Smith Center gave up just six points per game on defense.  With their 9th state title, the Redmen are now tied with Kapaun-Mt. Carmel for second place in total championships in the state of Kansas, only behind Lawrence in first place with ten.

We will announce the winners each week. Remember, you can nominate an athlete from any school sport.
