The Lincoln Lady Leopards Cross Country team and Rock Hills Senior Dereck Gillett have been named the Telephone and Cable Athlete of the Week.

Lincoln took home the 1A Girls State Cross Country Championship this past Saturday in Wamego.  Sophomore Jaycee Vath was the individual state champ for the Lady Leopards, running the race in 19:47.70, which was 26 seconds better than her teammate, senior Aubry Donley, who finished in 2nd place with a time of 20:13.60.  All four Lincoln runners finished in the top ten, as freshman Raegen Stewart was 8th with a time of 21:26.40 and her classmate Shelbie Ford took 9th place at 21:31.70.  The Lady Leopards finished with 16 points, which was 25 points better than the second place finisher Berean Academy.  The state title was the first for any Lincoln sport since the girls basketball team won the 2A title in 1980.

Gillett who has battled injury much of the season for the Rock Hills football team has come back strong for the Grizzlies.  In the 70-20 first round playoff win over Doniphan West on Thursday night, Dereck threw for 249 yards on 7-11 passing (64%) and had four touchdowns compared to no interceptions.  Coming into the game, Gillett had thrown for just 32 yards as the injury coupled with Rock Hills being a run-dominant team through the first eight games held down his passing production.

We will announce the winners each week. Remember, you can nominate an athlete from any school sport.
