The Smith Center Redmen football team members have been named the Telephone and Cable Athletes of the Week.

Smith Center won their second straight state football championship this past Saturday and their 10th overall title in school history.  The ten championships tied Lawrence for the most ever in Kansas high school football history since the playoff system began in 1969.  On Saturday, the Redmen cruised to a 59-0 win over Olpe at Lewis Field in Hays to claim the KSHSAA 1A championship.  The Redmen tallied 368 rushing yards in the win.  Ethan Peterson ran for 164 yards on 12 carries with 3 TD.  Colby Benoit added another 118 yards on 11 carries with three scores.  Jaden Atwood led the Redmen defense with 13 tackles and two for loss.  The Smith Center defense also intercepted Olpe four times on their way to the shutout.  Smith Center cruised through the 2018 playoffs, winning their games by an average score of 52-8.  On the season, they finished 12-1 with their only loss being to the 2A champion and league rival Phillipsburg.  The Redmen averaged 42 ppg through the season while giving up just over 8 ppg, including six shutouts.
