The Thunder Ridge Lady Longhorns basketball team and Sylvan-Lucas Junior Tra Barrientes have been named the Telephone and Cable Athletes of the Week.

Thunder Ridge claimed their 7th consecutive Northern Plains League Tournament Championship in Lincoln last week and tacked on a win over Pike Valley on Tuesday to move their record to 10-0 on the season.  In the NPL Tournament, the Lady Longhorns opened with a win over Rock Hills in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, 66-14.  They followed that up with a 68-21 win in the semis over Pike Valley on Thursday.  In the championship game on Friday, Thunder Ridge won 71-44 over Osborne.  Brennan Kirchhoff averaged 18 ppg in the three wins and Iva Rust had a great week as well, putting up 12.7 ppg.  Also during the week, Thunder Ridge coach Darren Grauerholz picked up his 200th career victory in the Rock Hills win on Tuesday.

Barrientes is having a great season for Lincoln on the wrestling mats this winter and, given the competition, had his best outing of the season this past weekend at the Beloit Invitational.  Barrientes went 4-0 on the weekend, which included a 3-1 win in the semis over previously unbeaten and #1 in 3-2-1A at 285#, Creighton Johnson of Beloit.  Barrientes went on to an 8-5 win over Eyann Zimmerman of Republic County in the championship match.  Zimmerman was ranked #2 in the state at the time.  However, after his performance in Beloit, Barrientes has moved up to the #1 spot in 3-2-1A this week at 285# as he is now 24-1 on the season.

We will announce the winners each week. Remember, you can nominate an athlete from any school sport.
