This week, we continue the Telephone and Cable Senior Athlete Spotlight.  Each week we'll spotlight a male and female athlete from area schools.  We continue with Smith Center High School seniors Colton Shoemaker and Bree Frieling.

Shoemaker concluded his sports career with a strong finish at the 3-2-1A State Wrestling meet in late February.  He went 3-1 at the tournament, finishing as the state runner-up in the 120# weight class.  On the season, Shoemaker went 35-11 for the Redmen.  That came on the heels of a third place finish at 3-2-1A State in 2019 at 113#.  Shoemaker was also a key player for the 12-1 Redmen football team which finished as the state runner-up in 2019.  He was second on the team with 898 yards and 12 TD rushing.  Shoemaker also had 89 tackles on defense, which was third best on the team and he added 8 TFL and an interception.  He was a 2nd-team all-MCL running back and honorable mention defensive back.

Frieling had a great senior season for Smith Center.  In the fall, she helped lead the Lady Red to the 2A State Tournament as they finished with a record of 34-7 on the season.  Frieling led the team with over 400 assists as a setter and added a team high 50 aces.  She had over 230 kills, averaging just under three per set and also added more than 80 blocks.  She was a 1st team all-MCL volleyball pick and was also voted 2nd team all-state by the KVA.  On the basketball court, she averaged 10.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.5 apg and 2.0 spg for the 11-9 Lady Red.  The MCL recognized her as an honorable mention all-league pick.  Frieling also excelled in track & field during her career.  She won the 2A pole vault state title as a sophomore in 2018.  In 2017 and 2019, she finished as the 2A runner-up in the event.  She also brought home an 8th place medal in the 2A long jump in 2018.
