
Five Lady Trojans earn all-league honors
The Beloit Lady Trojan softball team placed five players on the NCAA all-league team.
Tegan Dunstan, Echo Short, and Nicole Tyson were named to the first team, while Olivia Marozas and Leah Overmiller received honorable mention.
Tyson, a senior, led the team with a .486 batting average, .519 on-base percentage, 35 hits, 22 RBI, 36 stolen bases and seven triples. She was second on the team with 25 runs and had five doubles, five walks and six strikeouts.
Short, a junior, led Beloit with 28 runs and was second on the team with a .422 batting average, .506 on-base percentage and 34 steals. She drove in 10 runs, drew 10 walks and struck out nine times.
Dunstan, a senior, tied Short for second with a .506 on-base percentage and hit .400.
She had 16 runs, 14 RBI, 10 walks and seven doubles while striking out five times.
Marozas, a sophomore, was Beloit's top pitcher, going 6-0 while allowing just 16 runs in a team-high 46.2 innings pitched. She completed all six games she started and led Beloit with 48 strikeouts and 28 walks.
Marozas allowed also pitched in relief in three games and recorded one save. Offensively, she batted .413 and had a .456 on-base percentage with 19 runs, 8 RBI, and 28 stolen bases.
Overmiller, a junior, batted .328 and was third on the team with 30 steals and 21 runs. Her 13 walks led Beloit, and a .474 on-base percentage placed her fourth. She drove in 6 and struck out eight times.
The Lady Trojans finished at 17-5 overall and 11-1 in the NCAA to tie Sacred Heart for the league championship. They won 15 of their last 16 regular season games behind solid hitting, pitching, and baserunning.
Five of the Lady Trojans ended the season with 20 or more hits, and the team's three pitchers combined for 17 complete games. In 21 games (Beloit's first-round bye at regionals was counted as a win), six Lady Trojans stole 20 or more bases, including three with at least 30.
Beloit was the top seed in the Class 3A Regionals hosted by Riley County, where the Lady Trojans lost to Marysville in the semifinals.
Five Trojans earn all-league honors
Five members of the Beloit Trojans baseball team received all-NCAA honors for the 2010 season.
Zach Brummer, Kaleb Moeller, Garret Schmitt and Casey Smith were named to the first team, and Lane Koster received honorable mention.
Brummer, a sophomore, pitched in seven games, leading Beloit's staff with 54 strikeouts and 38.1 innings pitched. He went 3-2 and with a 3.83 ERA, allowing 29 runs (21 earned) on 36 hits and 26 walks.
Moeller, a senior, hit .400 with 16 runs and drove in 23 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .524, five walks, seven strikeouts, and seven stolen bases.
Schmitt, a junior led the team with eight doubles, two home runs, .475 batting average, .661 on-base percentage, and .825 slugging percentage. He scored 15 runs, drove in 14, and received 13 bases on balls. On the mound, Schmitt went 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 16 innings. He allowed 9 runs (7 earned) on 16 hits and six walks and six hit by pitches while striking out six.
Smith, a junior, led the Trojans with 25 runs scored while batting .358 and driving in 9. He had a .516 on-base percentage, stole five bases, and walked six times with six strikeouts.
Koster, a junior, batted .407 with a team-high 24 hits, including six doubles, a double and a homer. He scored 21 runs, drove in 10 and was successful on 10 of 11 steal attempts.
The Trojans went 12-7 overall and earned the top seed at the Class 3A Regionals in Marysville, where they lost to Rock Creek in the semifinals.
