[NCKS] Farris Delivers as Athlete of the Week

Lincoln Freshman Jenna Farris has been named the NCKS Sports.com/Cunningham Telephone & Cable Athlete of the Week.

At the Sub-State Tournament at Clay Center, Farris had a tourney that players dream of. Farris exploded for 45 points in a sub-state final win over Clifton-Clyde and on Saturday in the Sub-State Championship, Farris erupted for another 36 points in a win over Bern that put the Leopards into the 1A State Touranment in Hays. During the two games Farris scored 81 of her team's 114 points, averaged 9 rebounds, and went 26-32 from the foul line. On the season, Farris has had five 30 point plus games and averages 23.5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists per game and is shooting 48% from the floor and 79% from the foul line.

[NCKS] Floyd/Farris Named Co-Athletes of Week

Osborne Senior Danny Floyd and Lincoln Freshman Jenna Farris have been named the NCKS Sports.com/Cunningham Telephone & Cable Athletes of the Week.

On Saturday Floyd wrapped up his third straight 3-2-1A State Championship at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays with a 4-0 performance on the tournament and winning his championship match over Levi Schneider of Ellsworth at 140 pounds by a 5-4 decision. Floyd not only won his third straight state title, but also ended his career on a 103 match winning streak, and finished this season with a 36-0 record. Floyd also joined elite company in Osborne history as he matched Larry Grieve for the distinction of being the only Bulldog wrestlers to ever win three state championships. Danny is the son of Jim and Kiley Floyd of Osborne.

As a freshman, Farris led the Lady Leopards to a regional championship on Saturday with 29 points, 6 steals, 5 assists and 3 three pointers in the title game against St. John's. In the regional semifinal against Tipton, Farris scored 17 points, made 4 steals, and went 6-6 at the charity stripe. On the season, Farris averages 21.9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists per game and is shooting 47% from the floor and 78% from the foul line.

[NCKS] Streak's alive for Osborne's Floyd

"You shouldn't leave it up to the ref and I just remember thinking 'this stinks,' " Floyd said. "Coming all the way to state and not doing your best, that is just the worst, not doing as good as you can. I just filled up with a little bit of anger and other stuff and I just kind of thrived on it."

Floyd walked off the mat and went to coach Ryan Becker.

"(He) said, 'I am never losing again,' " Becker said. "And he hasn't."

[NCKS] Thomas Named Athlete of the Week

St. John's 6'4 senior Cole Thomas has been named the NCKS Sports.com/Cunningham Telephone & Cable Athlete of the Week.

Thomas has been a double-double machine lately with 3 straight double-double games and has 11 double-doubles on the season! Against Pike Valley on Feb. 12, Thomas scored 23 points and grabbed 24 rebounds. Against Lucas-Luray on Feb. 16, Thomas scored 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds along with three steals. He had already accomplished his double game after the first half with 15 points and 10 rebounds. On Friday, Cole continued his terrific play in a win over Tescott with 23 points and 19 rebounds.

Thomas averages 16.8 points and 10 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in 18 of his team's 20 games. He is the son of Mike and Carol Thomas, Beloit.

[NCKS] Heiland Named Athlete of the Week

Lakeside sophomore guard Keegan Heiland has been named the NCKS Sports.com/Cunningham Telephone & Cable Athlete of the Week.

Heiland has helped lead the Knights to a 15-4 record and a #1 seed at regionals. In Heiland's last three games, he has averaged 20.3 points including 26 points against Plainville last Friday. During the three game stretch, Keegan drilled three-three pointers in each game and shot 61% from the floor (19-31) and 78% from the foul line (14-18).

On the season, Heiland is averaging 13.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. Heiland has been lethal from beyond the arc, having made 54 treys and shooting an impressive 43% from three land.

Smith Center senior Colt Rogers, a two-time HDN Super 11 football player and one of the top wrestlers in Kansas history, received multiple looks from schools for football and wrestling. Pittsburg State University had been in contact with Rogers for a year and offered him a scholarship. In wrestling, Penn State University and University of Missouri, NCAA Division I powerhouses, recruited Rogers, but didn't offer him.

[NCKS] Kresin Named Athlete of the Week Again

It may seem like a broken record, but St. John's junior Vanessa Kresin has been named the NCKS Sports.com/Cunningham Telephone & Cable Athlete of the Week once again. Hard not to be named the athlete of the week after her near triple-double on Friday.

Kresin helped lead the Lady Jays to three victories over the past week including an incredible performance last Friday in Beloit against state-ranked Quivira Heights. Vanessa had 39 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and went a perfect 15 of 15 at the free throw line to beat the #8 ranked team in the state, 66-54.

Kresin followed up that with a solid 16 point, 4 rebound, 5 assist, 5 steal performance in a 42-41 victory over Rock Hills in what could have determined the Pike Trail League title.

On the season, Kresin is averaging 19.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 5.2 steals per contest and shooting 76% from the charity stripe.
