GRACE JOHNS, Women's Wrestling

Minneapolis Junior Grace Johns has been named the NCKSSports.com/Cunningham Telephone and Cable Athlete of the Week.

Johns qualified for the 4-1A Girls State Wrestling Tournament with a 2nd place finish this past Saturday at the 4-1A Regional in Hoisington.  She entered the tournament with a record of 30-1.  Throughout the season, she took first place finishes at Phillipsburg, Hays, Newton, Salina South, Abilene and McPherson and took 2nd place at Washburn Rural where she had her only regular season loss.  In Hoisington on Saturday, Johns opened with a win by fall over Lidia Alfonso of Scott City in 2:00 and then won by a 15-0 technical fall over Kenya Goss of Norton in the semifinals.  In the 170# regional championship, she suffered a tough loss by fall to Atavia Cain of Oakley in 4:43.  Despite the loss, Johns is now 32-2 on the season and will compete in the 4-1A State Tournament at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina on Wednesday and Thursday, February 22 and 23.
