MADISON HOWLAND, Women's Track & Field
Smith Center’s Madison Howland has been named the NCKSSports.com/Cunningham Telephone and Cable Athlete of the Week.
Howland had an outstanding summer competing in USA Track & Field events for the Kansas Flyers. Howland qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympics in Eugene, OR in three events. Individually, she won the Region 9 Championship in Jonesboro, AR in the 13-14 year old girls 3000m at 10:56.11 and finished in second place in the 1500m at 5:05.64. She was also part of the 4x800m Relay team that won the Region championship at 10:11.95. That 4x800m Relay group of Howland as anchor along with Jailyn Brandl of Tribune, Taryn Boydston of Ellis and Brilynn Trumpp of Plainville followed up with a National Championship at the USATF Nationals last Wednesday, July 26 with a time of 9:55.50. Individually, Howland finished 5th nationally in the 3000m with a PR time of 10:27.11 and had a PR in the 1500m with a time of 4:58.82, finishing 17th place overall out of 69 runners.
